Track Goals

abstract

  • have fun!
  • learn and share from each other
  • build peer networks
  • create an appreciation of new FOSS multimedia tools and their possibility for publishing, organisation and social networking, including how it can be practically applied to an organisations work.

concrete

  • know how to use open content licenses
  • create a draft strategy/blueprint as to how to employ these tools in their organisation (could be text or visual and added to the site)
  • contribute to building the website for track1

Framing Questions for Track Planning

  • Intended audience(s): who are you planning this track curriculum for? What assumptions are you making about skills and knowledge?

And - It's very hard to know the exact skills and knowledge before hand of the various participants. I am assuming their knowledge of the area to be limited but I can only base that on the previous Asia Source I went to. Any more indication from the organisers or other facilitators would be much appreciated.

  • Track goals: what new skills/abilities will each participant leave the camp having attained?

And -

  • create and edit audio and distribute it online, including podcasting
  • rip a dvd and convert it to be copied to CD, re-editted or distributed online
  • set up and run a blog
  • understand what a CMS, publish to it and configure it
  • encode, compress and upload video to the internet
  • know how to use multimedia production and distribution tactically as part of their advocacy/campaigns
  • ability to do basic editing of photos using gimp
  • know how to edit a wiki including adding new pages
  • Intermediate milestones to reach goals: what are the incremental skills/knowledge each participants will acquire to reach the track goals?

And-

  • understanding what a CMS is
  • understanding what a blog is
  • conceptual understanding of open publishing and participatory media production
  • Screening questions: what questions will you ask participants to determine their level of skill?

And-

  • Have you ever created an audio/video production? What software did you use?
  • Do you have a blog?
  • how often would you publish content online? What type of content? (audio, video, photos, text)
  • Do you know what a Content Management System is and can you install one?
  • Have you used a wiki before? To do what?
  • Have you ever produced printed materials? (flyer, posters etc.) If so what software did you use?
  • Do you subscribe to any podcasts? What ones? Have you ever published audio online?

And how will you determine their goals/needs?

And-

  • I think we should spend a significant portion of the first session discussing together what people aim to get out of the camp. Obviously there are quite distinct areas that different people are working that should provide some direction. We can also survey people in the lead up to the camp and ask them directly to establish some goals and communicate them with us. Is there are plan to have a separate list per track?

Agenda content for this track can be posted at Open Publishing and Broadcasting Agenda.

Hardware Requirements

What computers and other hardware are required for successful delivery of this track?

  • Decently fast computers for doing graphics, audio and video work.
  • Mp3/mini-disk recorders.
  • data projector
  • intranet server hosting various CMS for people to publish to - wordpress, drupal, loudblog, others?
  • it would be good to get people blogging from the beginning about the camp and also using that platform for podcasting - will something like that be set up?

What should participants bring?

Own laptop if possible and any audio/video/photo equipment they have.

Each participant will need access to a computer.

Any of their own multimedia creations they might like to work with.

Track CD

Participant CD's will be burned for each track, allowing them to take home a range of software, documentation and other resources. What should be on the CD for this track?

And_ - I would just give participants copies of the open publishing and audio/video editions of ngo-in-a-box. Creating a customised set of tools at this stage will be way too much work and these are already very much attuned to the content of this track.

Today's discussion is about open publishing. Cheekay has the first session, introduction to open publishing. Small group discussion generates questions then used to approach open publishing, especially as dealing with participatory, transparent editorial, the openness, trust and truth issues of open publishing.

Afterwards, the track participants are divided into 4 small groups to discuss track one web project planning. The discussion of the step by step web planning by the small groups are then brought back to the track discussion.

In small groups, the track participants discuss to answer these questions (they are basic question arise in the beginning of web development project)

  • Name of the site
  • Target audience, means the main visitors of the web and why they visit the website
  • Roles
  • Look and feel of the website
  • Promotion strategy of the web
<p>After coffee break, Cheekay continues with introduction to the web developing project and planning a web publishing project for the camp. It's a little difficult for the group to find the name of the website, so discussion about the name is being sent into the broader context, the camp vote their favorite name out of the four names prepared as the result of track discussion.

The names to be voted are:

  • asiafoss.org
  • asia-foss.org
  • foss-journal.org
  • flossing-asia.com

Next session is introduction to CMSs by Andy and Idaman. It is the hands on session in which all the participants are trying to get familiar with basic features of Drupal in which the web is developed.

Day 3

Wednesday, January 24th 2007

Open content licensing (And_)
This day started with Andy's discussion on Open Content Licensing. Open Source describes any kind of creative work like articles, pictures, audio, video, etc. published in a format that allow copying and modifying of the information by anyone. There's the GNU Free Documentation License and the Creative Commons. GNU Free Documentation License is strictly for commercial use and allows modifications while in the Creative Commons, you have the choice if you want to make it commercialized and allow people to modify it.
Introduction to blogging (Dina)
Dina gave a brief discussion on blogging. She defined blogging, how and when to use it, and its benefits and advantages. So blogging is like an online diary, journal entries, and basically contains the thoughts of the blogger. Several excellent blogs were shown and discussed by the group. Dina also talked about tagging, which proved to be very useful.
Photo publishing and distribution (Idaman/Dina)
The group worked on GIMP. Cheekay first took photos of each one of us. We then used these photos when we worked on the GIMP. We basically learned about compressing the photos and putting them up online. By the end of the day, we all have our photos in our user account in the camp blog. Check it out...

Day 4

Thursday, January 25th 2007

The days discussion is audio editing and open publishing. The morning session is introduction to digital audio/audacity by Andy. The session, as usual, is the hands on session in which all the participants are free to try and experience the use of audacity. The idea is simply to have a voice recording or piece of music, editing the recording and post the audio in the camp blog.

Next, Dina shares tracking and tagging skill also the use of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. She also gives brief introduction to bloglines, technorati, feedster, blogstreet, FURL and del.icio.us

After Dina's session, Andy introduces Podcasting. Basically it is the audio open publishing part. Andy shares the technical skills needed to have your audio published in the web. And, the hands on session is when participants of the track uploading the edited audio into the camp blog.

Day 5

Friday, January 26th 2007

Web and Mobiles (trixie)

Txt Power is one of the words of the day. Trixie from the Philippines spared us few minutes of her time to share her experiences and knowledge on the ability and power of SMS messaging as a tool for advocacy and broadcasting. Afterwards, the group divided into small group discussions to discuss their own experiences in using SMS as a tool. Mobile/text brainstorms after Trixie's talk:

  • SMS messaging known as one direction with no guarantee of response
  • can NGOs fin some income using mobile tech, eg download via sms database info for a small fee
  • Getting information via SMS database can be very cheap
  • SMS not always cheap + not in local language
  • SMS messaging can be effectively used in spreading information and it's potential for fundraising
  • It is possible to access the office server from the outside thru mobile as long as you have the internet connection
  • SMS messaging can be used for petitions and progress reports
  • Petitions thru mobile/text takes away the need to add name or other sign that makes people hesitant to do
  • Mobiles can also be used for personal blogging called MOBlogging
  • Information requests/product prices in realtime can be sent to a gateway

Video distribution (and_)

The discussion revolved on the site where one can publish videos, strategies for bringing your work out there and doing campaign work thru video distribution, creating and subscribing to video podcasts and the free and open source software tools that can be used.

Since the group has different topics in mind that they want to discuss other than the planned agenda, the facilitators decided to divide the group into 3 small group discussions: online advocacy, blogging, and more on video distribution. In video distribution, Andy taught us the way of compressing the video before we put it online. The usual standard size for videos on net is 320 x 240.

Day 7

Sunday, January 28th 2007

The morning session starts with the discussion in which both the track participants an facilitators contribute in the ways open publishing can give advantage to the NGOs/SMEs also in finding out the good model to open publishing by sharing stories of the good websites. The session then leads to the first big word of the day in track one : the information architecture.

Cheekay introduces the phrase and the participants contributing to the meaning.
Brainstorms on information architecture

  • how information is actually used by the audience
  • determining your needs
  • optimizing the use of information for the organization (policy/goals)
  • how organize collected information
  • effective information to the audience
  • how info flows from source to the audience
  • how data becomes info
  • knowing what approach to your audience
  • information community
  • design, build, optimally use and maintain information
As complete meaning is gathered, comes the next big word of the day which is specifications document.

The words contains:

  • Goals - basically the organization's objectives. One must think how the information can contribute to the goals.
  • Audience - listing of partners, collaborators, constituents, etc. One must determine the audience first and figure out why a particular user visits the website. Make a competitive and needs analysis.
  • Site Content - this is where the information comes in
  • Site Structure - come up with a navigation blueprints
  • Visual Design - layout of the site; the look and feel of it
  • Roles - who does what

Hands-on, the participants work as pairs, help one another to build the info-architecture for their organization/community. This time the participants have this homework: making short presentation to the group

Restructuring current web site by improving the front page, conducting simple usability test and adding more pages to elaborate more information. Other things on to do list: translating whole English version of the web site into Bahasa Indonesia and fixing missing links. A part from that, engaging budding writers among staff members to write more about project activities and issue-based opinions on a web log, either on an web log that is hosted externally or internally. Exploring the use and identifying the suitable FOSS tools for open publishing are also part of the web site restructuring agenda.

Improving the English-version website of Mining Advocacy Network (JATAM)

The flow of information at JATAM's english-version website is late compared to the Indonesian version. Apart from the update matters, there are some functions that should be added into the website like publications, feedback, and how the audience can contribute to our campaign. As mining sector involves the many foreign actors like corporations, journalists, financial institutions, and stock exchange, JATAM must consider a way to address them all as campaign targets.

The goal of the website construction is to bring more traffic to our website and to link it with the other open publishing websites that could further help spreading the organization's campaign. The audience that will be addressed by this website is the english speaking journalists, financial institutions, researcher, human rights and environmental activists, mining companies, and stock exchange brokers.

The content of the english website will be general information about the state of mining sector of Indonesia, the social and ecological risks of mining projects, our campaign, links, references, and feedback. The people who will be responsible for development of the website will be campaigner and website administrator.

I am working with the Asian Women in Co-operative Development Forum (AWCF), a resource center and advocacy body in gender and co-operatives in Asia. We have member organizations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. At present we already have a website that is already working.

My plan is just to revise the current website by making the discussion corner to be more interactive

The Discussion Corner aims to gather opinions, comments, thoughts to a certain topic.

But we are not getting any feedbacks, comments or opinions. Its been static. In this case, the Discussion Corner should have a strategic location in the website's main page. RSS should also be added. This I have to discuss with my superior and the web developer.

Bangge

My web project aims to provide space for gender issues in cooperatives to become more visible, as well as share tools, experiences and ideas to co-ops on how they can adopt a more integrated and gender-responsive approach in delivering credit services to their members.

I plan to put up a link in our organization's website towards the gender section/pages that I will be creating in collaboration with other people. The gender section will basically provide the information I mentioned above as well as get information, feedback, insights from co-ops through a blog. I will also integrate the use of SMS and mobile phones as a medium of getting more interaction with co-ops, especially key women leaders, so that they become introduced gradually and get warmed-up in using blogs and internet, while at the same time using the medium of communication they are more comfortable with: mobile phones.

The main target audiences will be the primary cooperatives affiliated with our organization and funding agencies. (Our organization is able to generate resources internally, but unfortunately it provides very little budget for gender mainstreaming work.)

Website revision
The Centre for Independent Journalism has been using a Content Management System for its website launched since 2006 as an advocacy and outreach tool. But we have since shifted target audience to focus on journalists and NGOs who will be able to give greater visibility to the issues of communication rights.
We would like to revise our website to be able to attract these two groups to take up our issues. We need to find ways in which we can reach out to the community of journalists, either by feeding into their blogs or mailing lists, and sending alerts to mobile phones for immediate follow up.
The content will still include alerts, statements and actions.
We would like to have a blog linked to our website to be able to generate dialogue and discussions and as a way of also generating traffic to the website.
The labels need to be changed, for example, instead of "advocacy", we should specify "media freedom", "FOI", "media giants", "Ban of creative works" etc.
